Achieved Divinity made its return in February 2007, with me releasing a 5-song sampler of the upcoming album, Quandaries. The demo, entitled The Dark Light, featured 5 tracks I had worked on during my time away from the world. It was a trying time for me, and music was my only means to escape. I had little contact with most of the world, only speaking to a few friends. The next two releases will detail to the world my feelings at that point in my life, and my feelings now. The Dark Impressions demo is due out first, and it contains 20 minutes of pretty lo-fi music that I created in a span of one week. This will be followed by Achieved Divinity's first full-length effort, which is tabbed to contain over an hour of music, exploring new horizons and employing different techniques as well. Hopefully this album will find a large audience, for it's my wish that one day people recognize me and my work. It would make me extremely happy to know someone out there enjoys what I do. In fact, its the only thing I hope to accomplish with this project, and it looks like its headed in the right direction. |
Q & A with Achieve Divinity
Q: Where does your artist name come from?
A: The name came from a song name by Finnish death metal band Demilich. The song title is ridiculously long, and the phrase Achieve Divinity is toward the tail end of the title, so I just changed it a bit.
Q: Tell us more about your musical roots!
A: I’m a big black metal fan, and many bands use ambient pieces to create a dark atmosphere in their albums. I’m heavily influenced by the style of ambient those bands use, its a lot more droning and absorbing. Aside from BM, I draw a lot of inspiration from ambient artists such as Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Lilohesie, Lustmord, etc. Bristol trip-hop also plays a big role in my music.
Q: How did you start producing music?
A: My old high school has a recording studio and I began this project on the side, and I would work on it before and after the classes were over. Over time I began to taking my work home and since then I’ve worked on Achieved Divinity at home.
Q: Are you also a DJ?
A: No.
Q: Do you work together with other artists also? E.g. Remixes?
A: I don’t at this time, but I wouldn’t mind doing it if the person that wants to collaborate with me comes with a clear idea, something experimental and different for sure.
Q: Do you have any special musical aims?
A: I aim to create challenging music. My goal with this project is to explore different forms of music, not just electronic, and not just ambient. Achieved Divinity is a way for me to express myself in whatever way I would like, using music as the medium.
Q: What do you think of the contemporary popular music which is played by normal radio stations?
A: It’s ok I guess. I listen to a lot of music, whether its rap music playing on the radio or jazz, whatever. I’ll listen to almost anything. I do think that a lot of music played on the radio is garbage though.
Q: What have you read recently (book, play, film, etc.) that moved or surprised you?
A: I’m not much of a reader or a fan of plays. As far as films are concerned, Irreversible was a big one. That’s a bold move by the writer and producer to go through with such a violent scene. It’s a great piece of film work though, in my opinion.
Q: What is your all-time favorite track? Why?
A: My all-time favorite track is called I Transpire, by Katatonia. This song is a great mix of shoegaze rock, metal, and gothic rock. The atmosphere is so depressing and great, and the vocals are incredibly ethereal. I would love to explore a style similar to this in the future.
Q: What's one thing you're a fan of that people might not expect?
A: Metal. I don’t look like the typical metal fan with long greasy hair. I try to look nice and clean because I have other interests than fitting in to some scene. |
